Carpet pile

For softness, you may opt for a cut pile carpet, in which the soft threads of the carpet are cut and frayed, making them soft and plush. In contrast, loop pile consists of the fibres being formed into little loops, making them more durable and better at concealing dirt. Cut loop pile, which is a mixture of cut pile and loops, is also available.

Carpet materials

Natural wool carpets are popular and extremely soft and durable. However, there are other materials to choose from, including polyester, which is stain and fade resistant, plus acrylic, which is a lower cost version of wool that still looks great, although it is less durable, or there is nylon, which is a popular, durable and versatile synthetic carpet material.

Carpet weight

The weight of a carpet refers to its density, or how many fibres are packed into its pile, and how tightly packed they are. Durability is generally improved the denser the carpet is, and the durability can also be increased if the fibres are twisted.
